Dapple Challenge

The Daily PaintWorks challenge this week was the dapple challenge. One early morning last summer I took a photograph of dapple patterns on my kitchen curtains. Windows open, no one awake but myself, a cup of coffee, warm morning breeze making the curtains slow dance. My favorite time of day. In the winter, not so much.

Dapple Challenge

One early morning last summer, I photographed the breeze coming through the open kitchen window. The shadow play on the curtains caught my attention, the sun rises to the right of the window and casts long, gray shadows on the softly moving curtains. It is quite a calming, meditative state of mind, that I hope I captured in this painting. I never knew the word for these shadows was dapple.

A gorgeous fall day. My garden hydrangeas are a stunning pink now, in July they were white. Last call in the North East for nice weather.

Hope

Fall is in the air, the temperature drop from last Thursday was very obvious. Soon the colorful flowers will be replaced by colorful leaves. A time of reflection and hope. The changes in my life, have changed me over the last few years. I hope I am a better person, I have learned so much from my children....Patience, kindness, acceptance and forgiveness. Most of all inclusion and understanding of differences, we each have our story. We each add value to life and the world.

I used a pallet knife with oil paints on this 8x10 canvas. The last of my summer flowers.

Storm on the Bay

Summer storms on a sweltering day in August. The drama in the sky was captured in a photograph. Spoondrift, another delightful word, is a showery sprinkle of sea water or a fine spray from the tops of the waves.

Colorful Light Challenge

Gibigianna is the play of light reflected from water or mirror. A sunlight area or a woman who flaunts her charms. I saw this word and definition on my Pinterest feed recently. It fits the DPW challenge for this week.

Summer is bowing out, you can feel it in the air. My favorite hydrangea bush has been my theme for painting this past week. The first in my series is this large canvas.

Time for the DPW challenge, just a week late.

I am drawn to the sky. I love observing the changes in the colors and textures of the clouds: the blues reflecting off the sky, different shades of white, mixed with grays, and bits of lavender or hints of lemon yellow here and there. Depending on the season, there is a surprising variety. Recently, this Autumn, our clouds have been surreal. Enormous and fluffy, with expansive shapes and vibrant colors. Our sunsets here in Erie are known for their dramatic color. They're often awe-inspiring. I've lived here a long time, but I'll never take them for granted. If I painted the atomic pinks and tangerine glow as I see them, It wouldn't look realistic. It would look exaggerated and otherworldly. These past few weeks, I've had my eye on the sky, and I've focused on painting the many different types of clouds I can find in my part of the world.

Balcony Challenge

This weeks challenge the Balcony Challenge. I added more flowers, and warm colors.

The real challenge, getting back into a work mode, finding creative spark, finding time to see it through. It has been an interesting summer, filled with with highlights and some very low lights.

Pinktacular

We have the most magical, colorful sunsets here on Lake Erie. The Presque Isle Peninsula is a color master in the evening. They never get old, even in the dead of winter. I once read that an artist should never paint a sunset, it's for amateurs. Not very artsy. I paint what I love.
